Cyperus compressus, also known as annual sedge, is a widespread plant found in tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia, and the Americas. In Europe, it is called hedgehog sedge, while in India it is known as mothi and in Japan as kugugayatsuri. This grass-like plant grows up to 0.75 meters tall and produces green-yellow-brown flowers from May to December. Its leaves are greyish-green and have a linear shape, while its inflorescence is composed of umbellate spikes. The plant forms dark brown to black nuts after flowering. It was first described by Carl Linnaeus in 1753 and has 11 synonyms. Annual sedge is commonly found in moist areas such as fields, ditches, and pond margins, and can grow in various soil types. It has been introduced in many areas, including parts of Australia.
