Cyperus bulbosus is a species of sedge that can be found in various regions across Africa, the Middle East, Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, and Australia. In Australia, it is commonly known as Nalgoo or bush onion, but it is not related to the onion family. While it is a popular component of Australian bushfood, it is considered an agricultural weed in other areas. This perennial plant has green to straw-colored leaves and propagates through rhizomes and bulbs. Its flower bundle is longer than its leaves and consists of spikes with involucre bracts. Cyperus bulbosus is an important food source for animals such as camels, Raso larks, bilbies, and brolgas, but it also poses a threat to rice crops. In Australian Aboriginal culture, it is known as merne yalke and is a traditional bush tucker food. This plant is found in various habitats and regions in Australia, but its numbers are declining due to competition with invasive grasses.
