Carex pendula, also known as pendulous sedge, is a large perennial plant found in woodland, scrubland, and hedges, as well as near streams. It prefers damp, heavy clay soils and is sometimes grown as a garden plant due to its unique appearance. Native to parts of Europe, it can also be found in north-west Africa, the Azores, Madeira, and parts of the Middle East. This tall plant can reach up to 1.8 meters in height and has smooth stems and long, hairless leaves. Its flowers are borne on long, drooping spikes and it typically blooms from May to June. Carex pendula has been introduced to New Zealand and has started to spread in the wild in the United States.
