Carex livida, also known as livid sedge or pale sedge, is a species of sedge with a scattered distribution throughout much of Eurasia, northern North America, and even in Panama and South America. However, it is no longer found in California. This plant grows in small clumps with stiff, leathery leaves that are a pale blue-gray color. It produces separate pistillate and staminate spikes and can spread through both rhizomes and seeds. Carex livida thrives in wet environments with calcareous and nitrogen-rich soils, often found in fens and bogs alongside sphagnum mosses and other sedges.
