Carex capillacea, also known as yellowleaf sedge, is a species of sedge found in various regions including Tasmania, Russia, New Guinea, and New Zealand. It is a densely tufted plant with erect and slender culms and green to pale brown leaves. Its inflorescence consists of one spike with a male portion above the female portion. It flowers from October to December and fruits from October to July, with its nuts being dispersed by granivory and wind. This plant is typically found in bogs, seepages, and the margins of ponds and pools. It is considered to be "At Risk – Naturally Uncommon" in New Zealand and "Threatened – Nationally Vulnerable" in Tasmania. Carex capillacea was first described in 1858 and its specific epithet, capillacea, refers to its thread-like appearance.
