Carex aquatilis, also known as water sedge or leafy tussock sedge, is a circumboreal species found in the northern regions of the Northern Hemisphere. It can be found in various habitats such as temperate coniferous forests, alpine meadows, tundra, and wetlands. This species has several varieties and can vary in appearance. It typically grows from a dense rhizome network, producing triangular stems that can reach heights of up to 1.5 meters. The inflorescence of this plant contains multiple spikes with a leaflike bract at the base. Its glossy achenes are its fruits, and while it can reproduce through seeds, it mostly spreads through its rhizome. Carex aquatilis can live up to 10 years or more and is known to form peat as its rhizome decomposes. It is also used for revegetation in areas where peat has been harvested.
