Puya chilensis is a terrestrial bromeliad that is native to the arid hillsides of Chile. It has large, dense rosettes of grey-green leaves with hooked spines and can grow up to 2 meters tall. The plant spreads through offsets and can take up to 20 years to flower. Its spines are believed to protect it from herbivores, earning it the nickname "sheep-eating plant". Puya chilensis is commonly found on north-facing slopes of matorral areas in the Andes at altitudes of 300-1000 meters. It is not considered a threatened species and is also cultivated in other parts of the world. However, its natural habitat is at risk due to human-caused fires and land clearance.
