Piper kelleyi is a wild relative of black pepper found in Ecuador and Peru. It is named after American botanist Walter Almond Kelley and belongs to the Macrostachys clade of the pepper genus. This species has long, white, hanging inflorescences and large leaves. It is mostly found in mountainous areas and produces compounds that protect it from herbivores. These compounds include a prenylated benzoic acid and 2 chromanes, which are unique to this species. Piper kelleyi was officially described in 2014 and is also known as "pink belly" due to the pinkish undersides of its leaves. It is a vital food source for several insect species, particularly caterpillars in the Eois genus.
