Piper hooglandii, also known as kava, is a flowering plant in the Piperaceae family. It is a shrub that can reach up to 2-3 meters in height and has heart-shaped leaves that are 7-12 cm long and 8-13 cm wide. The flowers do not have petals and the male spikes are 10 cm long while the female spikes are 6 cm long. The plant produces small, red, and spicy berries that ripen from March to May. It is found only on Lord Howe Island in Australia, where it grows in moist and shady conditions on basaltic soil. The species is locally common and can be found from the mountain summits to an elevation of 50 m along streams. Its flowering season is from September to November. The specific epithet of the plant, hooglandii, is named after Dutch botanist Ruurd Dirk Hoogland.
