Piper excelsum, also known as kawakawa, is a small tree native to New Zealand and some surrounding islands. It is a member of the Pepper Family and is known for its heart-shaped leaves and small, berry-like fruits. The leaves of kawakawa are often used in traditional medicine by the Māori people for various ailments. It is also commonly grown as an ornamental plant and has cultural significance in welcoming guests and mourning ceremonies. Despite its similar name, kawakawa is not the same plant as kava, a traditional beverage of the South Pacific. The name kawa-kawa was given to it by the Māori in memory of the kava plants they brought with them to New Zealand.
