The tropical rainforest understory shrub Piper cenocladum, also known as an ant piper, is a myrmecophyte that lives in mutualism with ants. It has broad, green leaves and grows in dim, swampy areas in Costa Rica and surrounding countries. The plant has hollow petioles that provide a home for ants, who in turn defend the plant against predators. However, the plant's food web is further complicated by the presence of a specialized beetle that feeds on the ants and their eggs, causing a decrease in the ant population and an increase in herbivory on the plant. This food web is an example of top-down control, where the top predator affects lower levels of the system.
