Genus Thottea in Family Aristolochiaceae
In botanical taxonomy, a genus (plural genera) is a rank used to group closely related species within a family. In the hierarchy, genus sits below family and above species.
Genera are defined by shared morphological, anatomical, and genetic characteristics (for example, features of flowers, fruits, seeds, or leaves) that indicate a close evolutionary relationship among the species they contain.
Each genus can include one or more species. Examples include Rosa (roses) and Solanum (nightshades, including tomato and eggplant).

Genus Description
Suggest a correction!Thottea Rottb. (Aristolochiaceae; Piperales) comprises approximately thirty species that occupy tropical Asian forests from the Western Ghats through Malesia to the Philippines. The type species, Thottea siliquosa (Lam.) Rottb., is recorded by Kew’s Plants of the World Online (POWO, 2024). The genus is readily recognized by its woody shrub or small‑tree habit, simple alternate leaves with a glossy surface and minute caducous stipules, and axillary racemes bearing small, tubular flowers with three to five reflexed lobes. A diagnostic floral feature is the semi‑inferior, bicarpellate ovary with axile placentation, which distinguishes Thottea from most other Aristolochiaceae that have a fully inferior, syncarpous ovary with parietal placentation (Kårehed, 2018). The fruit is a dehiscent capsule bearing flattened, winged seeds that aid wind dispersal.
Species richness is concentrated in the Malesian region, where several islands support local endemics, and a secondary centre occurs in the Western Ghats of India. Most taxa inhabit lowland dipterocarp and hill forest on limestone outcrops, typically up to about 1500 m elevation. Field observations indicate that the modest floral size and odor suggest fly pollination, although direct records remain scarce; seed dispersal is largely anemochorous through the wing‑like seed appendages (Kårehed, 2018).
Taxonomically, Thottea is now firmly placed in Aristolochiaceae following molecular phylogenetic analyses (Wang et al., 2018; APG IV, 2016). Historically the genus was assigned to the separate family Thotteaceae (Heine, 1995), a treatment still cited by some regional floras. Recent revisions have merged Thottea affinis with Thottea sumatrana (POWO, 2024), and Wang et al., 2018 identified two informally recognised clades corresponding to continental and island lineages.
In horticulture, a handful of species are cultivated in specialised botanical collections for their aromatic foliage and unusual flowers, but none are commercially important crops or timber trees. The genus does not appear on invasive species lists. Conservation assessments indicate that many species are threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation; several are listed as Vulnerable. Gaps include detailed population surveys and ex‑situ conservation strategies. Continued field work, combined with refined phylogenetic resolution, will be essential to safeguard the remaining diversity of Thottea. Further molecular work will also clarify species boundaries and aid in the design of targeted protection measures for this Asian lineage.
