Aristolochia rotunda, also known as smearwort or round-leaved birthwort, is a perennial plant native to Southern Europe. Its genus name, Aristolochia, comes from the Greek words meaning "the best" and "childbirth," reflecting its historical use in promoting uterine contractions. The plant has a distinctive root and heart-shaped leaves, and produces tubular, yellowish-green flowers with a dark flap. It is pollinated by insects and is the only host plant for the caterpillars of a rare butterfly. Aristolochia rotunda is found in Mediterranean countries and prefers moist, shady areas. However, it contains carcinogenic and toxic compounds, making it potentially harmful to humans. There are three recognized subspecies of this plant.
