In India, the plant is used to treat fever, rheumatism, and snakebite. In Ethiopia, the plant is used to treat fever, malaria, and dysentery.
Aristolochia bracteolata, commonly known as 'worm killer', is a perennial herb found in subsaharan regions from Mali to Somalia, the Arabian peninsula and India. It grows in sandy or lava soils at elevations of 50-740m above sea level and can be found on the banks of rivers, bushland, and desert grasslands. It has an unpleasant smell and stems 10-60cm tall from an underground rhizome. The leaves are ovate 1.5-8x1.5-7cm with a petiole 0.5-4.5cm long. Flowers are dark purple, 0.5-5cm tubular, with trumpet shaped mouth and capsules are oblong-ellipsoid, 1.5-2.5cm. It is usually gathered from the wild and used in traditional medicine in Nigeria, India, and Ethiopia as an infusion of dried leaves to treat intestinal worms, skin itch, or insect bites.
