Pandanus odorifer, also known as fragrant screw-pine, is an aromatic plant native to Polynesia, Australia, South Asia, and the Philippines. It is a small tree with stiff, spiny, and fragrant leaves that grow in clusters. In summer, it produces highly fragrant flowers used for perfume. The plant is propagated through offshoots and requires abundant water in summer. It is also used for its aromatic oil and distillate, known as kewra, which is used in cooking and perfumes. In Hindu mythology, the flower is believed to be cursed and is not used for worship. The plant is also used in traditional festivities and its shoots can be eaten after proper treatment. However, its fruit is not commonly consumed due to its fibrous texture.
