Suggest a correction!Biophytum DC. is a genus in the family Oxalidaceae comprising approximately 50 species of annual and perennial herbaceous plants distributed across tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. The genus type species is Biophytum sensitivum (L.) DC., which serves as the nomenclatural anchor for the group.
The genus is characterized by its distinctive rosette habit with pinnate leaves that exhibit nyctinastic movement, folding at night. Plants typically develop swollen tuberous or rhizomatous bases with prominent stipules. Inflorescences are axillary or terminal cymes, sometimes reduced to solitary flowers. The five-petaled flowers show actinomorphic symmetry with persistent sepals and fruit that dehisces explosively to release seeds covered in hydrophilic hairs that aid in dispersal through moisture absorption.
Species richness concentrates in Southeast Asia, particularly the Malesian region, and tropical Africa, with numerous endemic taxa found in the Western Ghats of India, Madagascar, and various islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Most species occupy shaded forest understories, but some occur in open grasslands at elevations from sea level to 1500 meters.
Pollination patterns remain incompletely documented, though floral morphology suggests insect visitation. Seed dispersal occurs through the unique explosive mechanism of the fruit capsules, and the hygroscopic seed hairs facilitate secondary dispersal through rain splash and water movement. Chromosome studies indicate a base number of x=7, with polyploidy documented in some species.
The genus currently comprises six recognized sections: Biophytum sect. Biophytum, sect. Acuminata, sect. Caulescentia, sect. Punctata, sect. Resupinata, and sect. Vaginata. Recent molecular phylogenetic work (Lourteig, 2014; Heibl & Quandt, 2013) has confirmed the monophyly of Biophytum and clarified relationships among sections, though some taxonomic boundaries remain unresolved. Alternative treatments recognizing different sectional arrangements exist in regional floras (Fischer & Vorster, 2008), reflecting ongoing systematic refinements.
Several species maintain horticultural significance as ornamental plants, particularly B. sensitivum and B. petersianum, cultivated for their responsive leaf movements. No species hold major economic importance as crops or timber sources.
Conservation assessments remain incomplete for most species, though habitat destruction represents the primary threat to forest-dwelling taxa. Continued taxonomic clarification and population monitoring are essential for effective conservation planning.
