Nymphaea thermarum is a unique and endangered species of water lily, known for being the smallest in the world. Discovered in 1987, it was named after its native habitat, a hot spring in Rwanda. Sadly, all wild plants were lost due to destruction of their habitat, but in 2009, the species was saved from extinction when it was grown from seed at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. However, in 2014, one of the surviving plants was stolen from the gardens. The plant forms small rosettes with bright green lily pads and tiny white flowers that can self-pollinate. It is a tropical day bloomer and belongs to the Nymphaea subgenus Brachyceras. The plant's native habitat was destroyed by local farmers, but it was successfully propagated at Kew Gardens. The first published occurrence of germination was in 2009, and the plant has since been grown successfully, giving hope for its survival.
