Barclaya motleyi is a perennial aquatic plant found in Thailand, Western Malesia, and New Guinea. It has stoloniferous growth and round to ovate leaves. The nocturnal flowers have a pungent fragrance and bear echinate, ellipsoid seeds. It can reproduce vegetatively through stolons and generatively through emergent and chasmogamous flowers. The species was first described by Joseph Dalton Hooker in 1860 and is named after its discoverer, James Motley. Its conservation status is currently data deficient, but it faces threats from habitat destruction and pollution. Barclaya motleyi is commonly used in the aquarium trade and can be cultivated in muddy, acid, fertile soils at specific temperatures.
