Genus Vochysia in Family Vochysiaceae
In botanical taxonomy, a genus (plural genera) is a rank used to group closely related species within a family. In the hierarchy, genus sits below family and above species.
Genera are defined by shared morphological, anatomical, and genetic characteristics (for example, features of flowers, fruits, seeds, or leaves) that indicate a close evolutionary relationship among the species they contain.
Each genus can include one or more species. Examples include Rosa (roses) and Solanum (nightshades, including tomato and eggplant).

Genus Description
Suggest a correction!Vochysia (Aubl.) belongs to Vochysiaceae and comprises trees and shrubs with about 150 species concentrated in the American tropics, especially the Amazon basin and Guiana highlands, extending through Central America to southeastern Brazil. It is the type genus of the family and the type species of the family is Vochysia guianensis Aubl., a designation fixed historically by A. de Jussieu and formalized later (The Plant List, 2013; Govaerts et al., 2024). Plants typically bear opposite or whorled, simple leaves with a well-developed interpetiolar stipule, which may be conspicuous and sometimes persist as a conspicuous scale at the node. The inflorescence is a terminal thyrse or panicle; flowers are strongly zygomorphic with five unequal sepals, one of which forms a conspicuous spur, and a single functional stamen. The ovary is superior with two or three fused carpels, usually with axile placentation. Fruit is a dry, dehiscent capsule, each valve typically bearing a narrow wing; seeds are flat, winged, and wind-dispersed.
Species richness is highest in the Amazon and Atlantic coastal forests of Brazil, with notable centers in the Guianas and the tepui formations of Venezuela and northern Brazil; several species are regionally endemic. Habitats range from lowland rainforest to montane forests, often along river margins and open woodland on well-drained soils, with a few species extending into savanna enclaves. Based on available surveys, Vochysia is largely mesic and rare in hyperhumid cloud forests.
Intrinsic biology remains incompletely documented. The single spurred stamen and zygomorphic perianth suggest specialized pollination, with hummingbirds as probable vectors for some taxa, but specific experimental evidence is sparse for the genus as a whole. Dispersal of the winged capsules is clearly anemochorous. Cytological records vary, but a base chromosome number of n = 11 (2n = 44) has been reported in the family and repeatedly inferred for Vochysia (Goldblatt & Johnson, 1979–), providing a coherent ploidy context without suggesting a strict uniformity across the genus.
Taxonomically, infrageneric treatments have emphasized sectional distinctions (e.g., Vochysia sect. Corynostylax), while recent phylogenetic work has identified major clades corresponding broadly to geographic regions and leaf whorl patterns, supporting monophyly of several sectional groupings (Amaral et al., 2021). Historical treatments (Ducke, 1935; Marcano-Berti, 1969) recognized numerous regional species and varieties, which have been consolidated or revalidated by modern treatments; for example, V. acuminata subsp. candollei has been resurrected as a distinct taxon by some authors (Berry et al., 2005). Generic circumscription remains stable, but several species boundaries remain unsettled, and comprehensive, global synonymy has not yet stabilized (WFO, 2024; Govaerts et al., 2024). The widely used monograph for many Amazonian taxa remains Ducke (1935).
Human relevance is largely non-medicinal; many species provide durable hardwood (e.g., V. divergens) used in construction and furniture, and several are widely planted as ornamentals for their showy inflorescences. A few taxa can become weedy in disturbed sites, but the genus is not regarded as broadly invasive.
Deforestation, habitat fragmentation, and climate change pose ongoing threats, especially for narrow endemics. Major advances in infrageneric phylogeny and species-level taxonomy are still needed to guide conservation assessments and sustainable use (Amaral et al., 2021; Govaerts et al., 2024).
