Olinia ventosa, also known as the hard-pear, is a large evergreen tree native to South Africa. It can grow up to 15-20 meters tall and has smooth grey bark that becomes rough and reddish as it matures. The tree produces fragrant pinkish-white flowers and occasionally bears pinkish-red berries. It is commonly found in afro-montane forests and coastal scrub, but is now also cultivated in gardens for its aesthetic value and as a shade tree. The wood of the hard-pear was historically used for furniture-making, but it is now primarily grown for its ornamental purposes. The leaves of the tree contain prunasin, a cyanogenic glucoside.
