It is found in a few sites in the south-west of the country, mainly in areas of high rainfall.
Epilobium brunnescens is a small, creeping, perennial plant with white or pale pink flowers. It is native to New Zealand and south-east Australia and has been introduced to Northern Europe. It grows in a variety of habitats, particularly open, shingly riverbeds in areas of high rainfall. In New Zealand, two subspecies are present, while in Australia, one subspecies is restricted to a single site in Alpine National Park. It has been introduced to Great Britain and Ireland, where it is now widespread in northern and western areas, and to Norway, where it is still rare.
