Family Myrtaceae, the genus Syzygium comprises about 1,200 accepted species (POWO, 2024) and is distributed across tropical Africa, South‑East Asia, the Pacific islands and northern Australia. It occupies lowland rainforests, riverine corridors and, locally, dry woodlands. The type species is Syzygium cumini (L.) Skeels, designated by early nomenclatural work.

Syzygium consists of trees and shrubs with opposite, simple leaves bearing conspicuous oil glands visible against the blade; stipules are absent or reduced. Inflorescences arise in leaf axils or at shoot tips as panicles, cymes or dense clusters. Flowers have five free petals, numerous stamens and a superior to half‑inferior ovary with two to five locules; the fruit is a fleshy berry containing a single, hard‑seeded embryo.

Species richness peaks in Malesia, especially Borneo, Sumatra and New Guinea, where numerous narrow endemics occupy montane and lowland rainforests. Additional centres lie in eastern Australia, Madagascar and tropical Africa, often linked to riverine or limestone habitats. Elevational ranges extend from sea level to roughly 2,000 m, reflecting the genus’s flexibility across moisture gradients. In these regions Syzygium often forms canopy‑dominant trees, contributing to forest structure and providing key resources for wildlife.

Most taxa are pollinated by insects, chiefly bees and flies, though some Asian species attract birds. Fruits are dispersed by birds and small mammals. The base chromosome number for the family is x = 11 (Murray et al., 1993), a value reported for several Syzygium cytotypes and supports phylogenetic stability within Myrtaceae.

Phylogenetic studies confirm a monophyletic Syzygium with several major clades, traditionally treated as subgenera or sections (Biffin & Wilson, 2020; Sytsma et al., 2014). Recent taxonomic revisions have merged former segregates such as Jambosa and Acmena into Syzygium (WFO, 2024), yet some authors retain those as separate genera, indicating ongoing circumscription debate. These divergent perspectives reflect high evolutionary rates and historical hybridization.

Several species have economic importance: Syzygium aromaticum yields cloves, while Syzygium cumini and Syzygium samarangense provide edible fruits. Syzygium paniculatum is widely planted as an ornamental street tree. Timber from large trees is used locally, but most taxa are valued for fruit or ornament rather than construction in horticulture particularly.

Many endemic taxa face habitat loss and climate pressures, yet conservation assessments are incomplete and taxonomic uncertainties hinder protection. Advancing molecular systematics, updating red‑list assessments and clarifying species limits will be critical to preserve Syzygium diversity over the coming decades.
