Syzygium guineense, also known as "Kokisa" in the Bambara language, is a leafy forest tree found in many parts of Africa. It belongs to the Myrtaceae family and is both wild and domesticated. The tree produces edible fruits and leaves, with the pulp and fruit skin being consumed while the seed is discarded. It is also referred to as "waterberry", although this name may also be used for other Syzygium species. S. guineense can grow as a tree, shrub, or subshrub and can reach heights of up to 25 meters. Its bark is smooth when young but becomes rough and black with age. The tree has a wide range and can be found in various habitats, including forests, woodlands, and savannas. It is also used as a shade tree and a famine food in some areas. There is debate about its taxonomy, with four subspecies identified by some experts, while others consider them to be separate species.
