Syzygium acre is a unique and fascinating tree found in the understory of rainforests in New Caledonia. Belonging to the Myrtaceae family, it is known for its pachycaul or "palmoid" appearance, growing up to 33 feet tall. Its trunk is usually unbranched, but can have multiple vertical reiterations with large rosettes of leaves at the top. The leaves can reach up to five feet in length and 16 inches in width. The tree produces pinkish flowers that grow directly out of the trunk and dark purple, fibrous fruits. This endemic species is a beautiful and important part of the New Caledonian rainforest ecosystem.
