Pimenta pseudocaryophyllus, commonly known as cataia, craveiro or louro-cravo, is a species from the Myrtaceae family that is widely distributed in pantropical and subtropical regions. It contains chavibetol and methyleugenol and is used in traditional folk medicine for its diuretic, sedative, and aphrodisiac properties. In the state of Paraná, Brazil, an infusion of P. pseudocaryophyllus leaves is used to treat arthritic and gouty affections of the joints, fever, and other diseases. Studies have also found that its extracts have anxiolytic and sedative action and antioxidant activity.
