Myrcia neothomasiana, also known as Thomas' lidflower, is a rare plant species in the Myrtaceae family. It is found on three Caribbean islands, with a total of less than 250 individuals. It has been extirpated from its original location on Saint Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands and now only grows in cultivation. This evergreen shrub or small tree has oval leaves and four spoon-shaped petals on its flowers. Its natural habitat is dry to moist forests on the highest mountain peaks of Vieques, St. John, and Virgin Gorda. The decline of this plant is due to both natural rarity and habitat loss, with the Vieques population located on land formerly owned by the U.S. Navy. The plant is still vulnerable to severe events like hurricanes, as seen with the damage caused by Hurricane Hugo in 1989. On St. John, the plant faces threats from nearby roads and feral animals. Deforestation has also contributed to its addition to the endangered species list in the United States.
