Metrosideros robusta, also known as the northern rātā, is a large forest tree native to New Zealand. It can grow up to 25 meters tall and often starts its life as a hemiepiphyte, using the branches of mature trees as support. Its leaves are small, dark green, and have a distinct notch at the tip. The tree produces vibrant red flowers between November and January and its bark provides a habitat for epiphytic plants. Northern rātā is found in the North Island and parts of the South Island, but its population has decreased due to threats such as browsing by possums and hybridization with other species. Efforts have been made to conserve the species, and it can be propagated from fresh seeds. There are also several cultivars of northern rātā, as well as hybrids with other species.
