Melaleuca pancheri is a shrub or small tree that is native to the south of Grande Terre, the main island of New Caledonia. It belongs to the myrtle family, Myrtaceae, and is one of the few members of its genus found outside of Australia. Formerly known as Callistemon pancheri, it can reach a height of 10 meters and has a rounded canopy and papery bark. Its leaves are initially hairy and silvery-grey, but become smooth as they mature. The flowers are yellow to yellow-green and arranged in spherical heads, with 16 to 20 stamens per flower. The fruit that follows is a hairy, woody capsule. This species was first described in 1864 and was later transferred to the genus Melaleuca in 1998. It is named after the French explorer Jean Armand Isidore Pancher and is only found on Grande Terre, growing in moist forests and scrub at altitudes between 100 and 700 meters.
