Melaleuca calothamnoides is a shrub in the myrtle family that is native to a small area on the west coast of Western Australia. It has striking red and green flowers and soft foliage, but has proven to be challenging to grow in gardens. The plant grows up to 4 meters tall and has rough bark and fleshy, linear leaves. Its flowers are arranged in cylindrical spikes and bloom from July to October. The fruit are woody capsules found in dense spikes along the stem. This species was first described in 1862 and is named for its resemblance to another plant in the Calothamnus genus. It is found in the Murchison River area and is not considered threatened. While its attractive appearance makes it desirable for horticulture, it can only thrive in well-drained, acidic soils.
