Homoranthus cummingii is a unique plant belonging to the myrtle family Myrtaceae and is found only in a small area in Queensland. It is an upright shrub with pointed leaves arranged in four rows along the branches. The flowers are creamy white to pale yellow, turning red as they age, and hang downwards in pairs. This plant is only known to grow on Mount Zero, located northwest of Townsville. It sporadically flowers throughout the year, with peak blooming in September, January, and May. It was first described in 2011 and is named after Russell John Cumming, who discovered the species. The plant population is estimated to be around 30-50 plants and is found in shallow, sandy soils among granite rocks. The species is considered critically endangered due to potential threats such as inappropriate fire regime and severe drought. It is recommended to have a conservation code of 2E, according to the criteria of Briggs and Leigh (1996) and the IUCN (2010). The plant is currently managed by the Australian Wildlife Conservancy.
