Eucalyptus patens, also known as yarri or blackbutt, is a flowering plant found in the south-west region of Western Australia. It is a tall tree with rough bark, lance-shaped leaves, creamy-white flowers, and spherical to oval fruit. It was first described by botanist George Bentham in 1867 and its name comes from the Latin word for "spreading". The tree is commonly called blackbutt, but this name is shared by other Eucalyptus species and the name yarri is now preferred. It grows well in gravelly soils and is often found in valleys and along stream banks. The flowers attract insects and birds, and the bark provides habitat for insects. The timber of Eucalyptus patens is highly valued for its durability and non-flammability, but it is in short supply due to conservation efforts. The tree can be cultivated and its seeds germinate easily. It also produces a large amount of pollen, making it a valuable source of food for bees.
