Combretum erythrophyllum, also known as the river bushwillow, is a medium to large-sized tree commonly found along river banks in southern Africa. It is often planted as a shade and ornamental tree in South Africa and the United States, and is propagated through seeds. The tree has a straight or multi-stemmed bole and a dense spreading crown, and is known for its frost and drought hardiness. Its leaves are simple, elliptic, and arranged in whorls of three, turning yellow and red in autumn. The tree produces cream or yellowish flowers in dense spikes, followed by small, 4-winged fruit. It is found in Botswana, Eswatini, Mozambique, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The tree plays an important role in the ecosystem, as wasps lay their eggs in its fruit and the larvae are eaten by birds. The roots of the tree are used for medicinal purposes, and it has various common names in different languages.
