Struthiola is a genus of evergreen shrubs in Thymelaeaceae. The most recent checklist recognizes about 45 accepted species (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024). Its range extends across southern Africa, with a strong concentration of diversity in the Cape Floristic Region, extending east to the Drakensberg–Lesotho highlands and south to the Karoo and southern Cape coast (Bredenkamp & Van Wyk, 2013). The type species is Struthiola longiflora (L.) L.

Diagnostic traits are consistent with the family but readily distinguish the genus. Plants are low to medium shrubs with opposite, decussate leaves that are often leathery and glabrous to pilose; stipules are absent. Flowers are solitary in the leaf axils or arranged in terminal spikes; the calyx is four-lobed with a long, usually narrow tube and a distinctly pilose throat. The corolla is represented by four small, often scale-like petals (corolline scales) that alternate with the lobes. The superior ovary is usually four-parted with a single ovule per lobe; fruits are one-seeded nutlets.

Species richness is highest in the southwestern Cape, with numerous local endemics in fynbos, strand, and karroid shrublands, and additional taxa on coastal dunes and mid-altitude mountains. Typical habitats span acidic sands and rocky soils at low to middle elevations; many are associated with nutrient-poor, fire-prone fynbos (Beaumont, 2009). Biogeographically the genus illustrates the pattern of high narrow endemism typical of the Cape flora, with a few wider-ranging taxa to the east.

Pollination has not been studied comprehensively across the genus, but evidence from related Thymelaeaceae in southern Africa points to generalist insects. Fruits are small, dry nutlets adapted for wind and possibly animal-mediated dispersal; the ontogeny of the four-parted ovary is a hallmark of the family and contributes to efficient seed packaging (Miller & Sections, 1984).

Recent taxonomic work consolidates Struthiola as accepted and relatively well defined. No widely used sectional system has gained stable acceptance; historical proposals (e.g.,Dummer, 1912; Beaumont, 2009) require modern phylogenetic testing. Molecular studies place Struthiola within the core Thymelaeaceae, often as the type of the Engleristephaninae subtribe, which is supported in some phylogenies (Beaumont, 2009), although comprehensive sampling remains uneven and clade support varies.

The genus has limited horticultural use; a few species are cultivated as small ornamentals for drought-tolerant gardens. No major timber, food, or agricultural weeds are recorded for Struthiola.

Conservation concerns mirror those of Cape flora: habitat loss from agriculture and urbanization, invasion by aliens, altered fire regimes, and climate change. Many local endemics remain data-deficient, highlighting the need for targeted surveys and phylogenetic resolution to refine conservation assessments.
