Henry's Lime (Tilia henryana Szyszyl.) is a deciduous tree native to China that was introduced to the West by Ernest Wilson in 1901. It was named for the Irish plantsman and sinologist Augustine Henry, who discovered it in 1888. It grows to 25 m in height, with pale grey fissured bark and sea green cordate leaves with ciliate margins. The fragrant, almost white flowers appear in clusters of up to 20 in autumn. It grows best in sheltered locations and two varieties are recognized, var. henryana and var. subglabra. The TROBI Champion grows at Birr Castle, Co. Offaly, Éire and was planted in 1946.
