Malva preissiana, also known as the Australian hollyhock or native hollyhock, is a herbaceous perennial found in all Australian states. It can grow up to 3 meters high and wide, with hairy leaves and showy flowers in spring. The plant was once common in southern Australia but has become rare due to destruction of its habitat. It has important medicinal properties and is easily propagated from its complex black seeds. The plant is named after German botanist Joann August Ludwig Preiss and belongs to the Malvaceae family, which has over one thousand known species. Malva preissiana is ornithocoprophilic, meaning it thrives in environments with an abundant source of bird faeces. It is also xeromorphic, allowing it to survive in dry climates. The plant has white flowers and is historically significant as it has been used for food and medicine by indigenous and non-indigenous people. It is currently listed as vulnerable and faces threats from human activity, introduced species, and bird activity. Restoration projects have been conducted to help promote the growth of Malva preissiana and support local bird populations.
