Cola verticillata is a tree species found in tropical forests of Africa. It is also known as owe cola, slippery cola, and mucilage cola. It was first described by botanist Peter Thonning and later given its current name by botanists Otto Stapf and Auguste Chevalier. This medium-sized tree can grow up to 25 meters tall and has glossy, oval leaves arranged in groups of three or four. It produces cream-colored flowers with purplish-brown stripes and bitter fruits that are not edible. Cola verticillata is native to West Central Africa and can be found in countries such as Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It grows in lowland forests, particularly near streams and swamps. This tree is important for its timber, which is used to make fetish images in southern Nigeria. Its nuts, which contain caffeine, are also gathered from the wild and used to make a drink. However, the kola weevil, which damages cultivated kola nuts, is also attracted to Cola verticillata and other wild Cola species, potentially maintaining its population even when cultivated species are not available.
