Ceiba chodatii, also known as the floss silk tree, is a deciduous tree found in the tropical and subtropical forests of South America. It has a unique bottle-shaped trunk that stores water for the dry season and is locally known as palo borracho. This medium-sized tree has a tall, stout, and bare trunk with a rounded crown and smooth bark. Its leaves are palmate with five lobes and serrated edges, and its large, creamy white flowers bloom between February and May. The tree is native to Bolivia, Paraguay, and Argentina, and is an important source of water for indigenous people and their cattle. The trunk fibers are used to make ropes, while extracts from the bark are used for tanning and dyeing. The tree plays an important role in the ecology of the dry chaco region, providing shelter and food for various animals and insects.
