Viola purpurea, also known as goosefoot violet, is a small plant with yellow flowers and thick, oval leaves that are green with a purplish tint. It is commonly found in the foothills and mountains of the western United States, including the Cascade Mountains, coastal ranges, and Sierra Nevada. This species has several subspecies, all of which are known as goosefoot violet and can be found across the western US. It is a member of the chaparral plant community and is most commonly found in low elevation mountains. Some subspecies, such as Viola purpurea subsp. charlestonensis, can be found at high elevations of up to 8500 ft. Viola purpurea is a widely distributed species, with its most common variety being Viola purpurea subsp. venosa.
