Viola decumbens is a perennial plant belonging to the violet family, with a woody base and linear leaves. Its purple flowers have five petals and a spur, and it grows in fynbos in the southern Western Cape province of South Africa. It is also known as wild violet and is endemic to this region. The plant has small, fine granules on its green parts and grows up to 25 cm tall. Its flowers bloom from July to December and it is classified in the section Xylinosium, along with two other species. Viola decumbens is found in the extreme south of the Western Cape, preferring moist sandy soils on low altitude slopes.
