It prefers calcareous soils and can be found in the mountains of south-eastern Europe.

Viola calcarata is a species of flowering plant in the Viola genus, commonly known as long-spurred violet or mountain violet. It is a herbaceous perennial that grows on mountains in south-eastern Europe, typically reaching heights of up to 15 cm. The plant has short and glabrous stems, with leaves that can vary in shape and size. Its flowers have a large corolla of various colors, with a long spur on the lower petal. Viola calcarata is found in alpine environments, growing in meadows and pastures at elevations between 1500 m and 2800 m. It is most commonly found in calcareous soils and blooms from May to August.
