Salix daphnoides, also known as the European violet willow, is a plant species in the Salicaceae family. It can grow as a large shrub or small tree, reaching heights of 6-8 meters, and sometimes up to 12 meters. Its crown is rounded with spreading branches and smooth, grey bark. The leaves are oblong to narrow/obovate and have a dark shiny green upper surface and a glaucous underside. This plant produces catkins in February-March. It is native to central Europe, but has been cultivated and naturalized in a wider area. It can be found at altitudes of 100-2000 meters, typically along the banks of rivers and wetlands. Salix daphnoides is listed as 'Least Concern' by the IUCN due to its widespread distribution, but is still listed on some country's 'red lists'. It is often used for erosion control on sand dunes and is also popular as an ornamental plant in parks and along roads. One cultivar, 'Aglaia', has received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
