Ethnobotanical Uses

In the Amazon basin, Catio peoples have traditionally prepared a leaf tea to relieve fever and digestive discomfort (Leautaud-Dubois & Sauvain, 2005). In Peruvian lowland communities, leaf infusions have been taken for stomach pain and after meals to support digestion (Alonso & Desmarchelier, 2015). In Colombia’s Chocó, both leaves and bark have been used in decoctions for wound washing and mouth rinses (Galeano et al., 2008). In Ecuador’s Shuar and Achuar regions, infusions of the young leaves have been employed for relief of upper respiratory congestion (Jara, 2013).

To illustrate, a simple mild leaf tea is prepared by adding one level tablespoon of fresh leaves (roughly 1 g) to a cup (240 mL) of nearly boiling water, covering, and steeping for 10–12 minutes before straining. One cup may be taken two to three times daily after meals; avoid exceeding five cups per day. As studies are limited, use is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and those with known plant allergies should avoid it.

Contemporary investigations show that leaves and young stems contain flavonoids such as quercetin, kaempferol and luteolin, saponins, and coumarins; the bark also has reported tannins and phenolics (Silva et al., 2006). These classes of compounds are consistent with mild antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and astringent actions often attributed to Casearia species in traditional practice.

Although Casearia grewiifolia is not widely commercialized, local herbal commerce and small-scale sustainable harvesting continue, and research into its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties is ongoing in academic and pharmaceutical programs (Leautaud-Dubois & Sauvain, 2005; Silva et al., 2006).
