Carallia brachiata is used across South and Southeast Asia in simple preparations that emphasize its astringency. In eastern India, the bark is decocted and drunk to treat diarrhea and dysentery (Janghel et al., 2014; Das et al., 2013), while an infusion of the leaves is applied as a wash for wounds and ulcers (Jain and Chauhan, 2004). In West Bengal, a sap infusion from the bark is given as a tonic after delivery (Bhadra et al., 2011). In the Andaman Islands, leaf sap or an infusion is taken for dysentery (Das et al., 2013), and a poultice of crushed leaves is applied to mumps (Das et al., 2013). In the Western Himalaya, a bark decoction is used for diarrhea and dysentery (Bennett et al., 2021).

For a mild astringent preparation, make a bark decoction: Simmer 10–15 g of dried bark chips in 250–300 mL of water for 15–20 minutes, strain, and drink 1/2–1 cup two or three times daily until symptoms subside (Janghel et al., 2014; Das et al., 2013). A leaf infusion for topical use: Place 5–8 g of fresh or dried leaves in 250 mL of hot water, steep 10–15 minutes, strain, and apply as a wash 1–2 times daily (Jain and Chauhan, 2004). A simple poultice: Clean and crush fresh leaves, spread the moist mass onto clean cloth or gauze, and apply to swollen areas 15–20 minutes several times a day (Das et al., 2013). Safety notes: Do not exceed short‑term use for diarrhea; consult a clinician if symptoms persist or during pregnancy. In Ayurveda this bark is categorized as astringent (astringent rasavaha) and may interact with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs; use cautiously in these cases (Janghel et al., 2014).

The astringent actions likely derive from high levels of tannins documented in the bark, along with flavonoids (e.g., quercetin derivatives), proanthocyanidins, and triterpenes (e.g., betulinic and lupeol) reported from Carallia brachiata (Quattrocchi, 2012; Singh et al., 2005). These groups are well established in related mangrove species and explain traditional use for diarrhea and as a topical hemostatic.

Bark and leaf preparations remain part of household medicine in parts of India and the Andamans, and C. brachiata occasionally appears in regional ethnomedicine catalogs, while ongoing phytochemical work continues to focus on its tannins and triterpenes.

Wood and fiber:
The heavy, hard heartwood is used locally for furniture, construction, door and window frames, agricultural implements, and turning/carving. The sapwood is often small and may be rejected. The wood is valued for its density and durability; typical air-dry density ranges from about 690 to 960 kg/m³. It is used as fuel wood and charcoal due to its high calorific value.

Colorants and tanning:
The heartwood yields brownish-yellow to rose-colored dyes and has historically been employed as a brown natural dye for textiles, especially on protein fibers.

Properties relevant to use:
Air-dry density typically around 690–960 kg/m³, with heavy, hard wood of fine grain and good dimensional stability in service; heartwood is notably colored and serves as a dye source.

Sustainability and sourcing:
The species occurs naturally but is generally not abundant; small stem sizes and limited distribution constrain large-scale commercial use. Local harvesting is typical, and bark and heartwood are harvested as needed.
