Flueggea neowawraea, also known as the mēhamehame, is a flowering tree that is native to Hawaii and belongs to the Phyllanthaceae family. It can be found in various types of forests at elevations between 250 to 1,000 meters. This tree is often found alongside other plants such as kukui, hame, ʻahakea, alaheʻe, olopua, hao, and aʻiaʻi. Mēhamehame is one of the largest trees in Hawaii, growing up to 30 meters in height and with a trunk diameter of 2 meters. The wood of this tree is extremely hard and was used by Native Hawaiians to make weapons. However, the population of mēhamehame has declined in recent years, especially after the arrival of the black twig borer, which caused a significant decrease in numbers. Today, this species can only be found in a few areas on Kauaʻi, Oʻahu, Maui, and the Big Island. Most of the living trees are either basal shoots from older trees or outplanted saplings. Despite the decline, many dead
