Passiflora tetrandra, also known as kōhia, is a climbing vine that is native to New Zealand. It is the only species of passionflower found in the country and is endemic to New Zealand. This forest vine can grow up to 10m in height and has broad, shiny, green leaves that are untoothed. Its small white to yellow flowers appear in groups of 1-3 between October and December. The plant is dioecious, meaning that it requires both male and female plants for fruit production. The fruits, which are lemon-shaped and orange in color, can be found from summer to autumn and are traditionally eaten by the Māori people. The gum from the stem of the plant is also chewed. Kōhia can be propagated through seeds or cuttings and is easy to grow, requiring a support structure and cool soil.
