Barteria fistulosa is a small evergreen tree found in tropical Central Africa, with glossy green leaves and small white flowers that produce small globular fruits. It is known as the "ant tree" due to its symbiotic relationship with the aggressive ant species Tetraponera aethiops, which lives in its hollow branches and defends the tree against herbivores. This tree is also used in traditional medicine for various purposes, such as reducing fevers and pains, healing wounds, and even as an aphrodisiac. It is found in moist mixed forests and can tolerate deep shade.
