Campylospermum (Tiegh.) comprises about seventy species of shrubs and small trees in Ochnaceae, widely distributed across tropical Africa with centers in West and Central Africa and numerous taxa on Madagascar, and with disjunct representation in Southeast Asia (Flora of Zimbabwe, 2019; Ghogue et al., 2016). The type species is Ouratea campanulata as designated by Tieghem, although Ouratea itself has been historically confused with Campylospermum (Ghogue et al., 2016).

Members are evergreen or semi-evergreen with spiral leaves often bearing scaly or rusty indumentum; small stipules are usually present and can be caducous. Flowers are small, usually yellow, borne in axillary to subterminal racemes or thyrses; sepals are valvate, petals are contorted, and the stamens typically have short filaments and conspicuous connective appendages. The superior ovary comprises five free carpels, each with lateral placentation; fruits are apocarpous drupelets that often split along the septum, giving a schizocarp-like appearance with persistent styles on each drupelet.

Diversity and range are greatest in lowland to submontane rain forests, riverine and swamp forests, and forest margins from sea level to ca. 1,500 m, with notable local endemism in West and Central Africa and on Madagascar; several taxa occur in miombo and other drier woodland mosaics (Bissi et al., 2022). A western–central African concentration and Malagasy disjuncts point to historical forest–savanna dynamics and long-distance dispersal (Ghogue et al., 2016).

Intrinsic biology remains poorly documented in several areas; carpenter bees and other insects have been observed visiting flowers, but systematic pollination records are sparse; fruit and seed dispersal details are likewise undercollected. Base chromosome number is not yet consistently reported in the literature and requires verification (Bissi et al., 2022; Ghogue et al., 2016).

Taxonomy and phylogeny have shifted since 2000: Ochnaceae and Malpighiales have been stabilized in recent classifications (APG IV, 2016), while the African Campylospermum complex has been revised. Some recent studies treat Campylospermum as distinct from Ouratea (Ghogue et al., 2016), whereas others incorporate it within a broadly defined Ouratea (Shorthouse, 2010–2024). The genus shows two principal morphological variants—those with free versus united styles—that may correspond to deeper clades (Ghogue et al., 2016); further resolution is needed, and both treatments remain defensible in the literature.

Human relevance is modest: a few species are locally cultivated as ornamentals for shade, and some produce hard wood used for small timber items; few taxa are recognized as invasive (Ghogue et al., 2016; POWO, 2024).

Conservation and outlook require updated, standardized red-list assessments at national and continental scales due to habitat loss; targeted field and phylogenomic work would resolve species limits and refine the taxonomy (Ghogue et al., 2016).
