The Mongongo tree is a large, spreading tree found in subtropical southern Africa. It is part of the family Euphorbiaceae and is the only member of the monotypic genus Schinziophyton. The tree reaches 15-20 meters tall and is found on wooded hills and among sand dunes. Its leaves are a distinctive hand-shape and the pale yellow wood is lightweight and strong. The fruits of the tree, known as mongongo fruits, mongongo nuts, manketti nuts or nongongo, are egg-shaped and velvety. They contain a thin exocarp around a thick, hard, pitted shell containing an edible nut. The nuts are a staple diet for the San people of northern Botswana and Namibia and are also used as a body rub in the dry winter months. The wood is used for fishing floats, toys, insulation and drawing boards.
