Kpangnan in Ghana
Plukenetia conophora, also known as Nigerian walnut or conophore, is a climbing shrub found in tropical western and central Africa. Despite its name, it is not related to the walnut but is named for its nut's resemblance to the walnut. It is native to countries such as Togo, Congo, and Sierra Leone, and is commonly found in rainforests and plantations at elevations between 250-1,400 meters. It is the only Plukenetia species native to West and Central Africa, with other species found in different parts of Africa, the Indian Subcontinent, Southeast Asia, and America.
The plant produces long stems and thin-shelled nuts that can be single, double, or triple-shelled. It belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family, which is a large family of flowering plants found mainly in tropical regions. The genus Plukenetia has 19 species, with three sections or species groups, including Plukenetia conophora. The plant has multiple uses, including being a source of food, traditional medicine, and oil. Its nuts are often consumed as snacks and can be boiled, roasted, or ground into a powder
