Euphorbia poissonii is a highly toxic and irritant succulent plant native to northern Nigeria. It is used by local farmers as a pesticide and by the Berom people as a protection against witchcraft. It contains two highly irritant resiniferonol-type esters, resiniferatoxin and tinyatoxin, which bind to pain receptors and stimulate them to fire repeatedly, causing pain. Resiniferatoxin is currently being researched as a possible treatment for chronic pain.
